Choosing Interior Paint Colors for the Post and Beam Home

I was recently involved in the extensive redecorating of a large post and beam home. Its original décor was done in a country style and was showing some serious signs of wear as well as looking a bit dated.
The decor was getting a bit dated looking.

The decor was not my style.

I discovered one of the best, most cost effective and immediate ways to create a totally fresh look was with paint. I also learned the importance of choosing the correct shade of a color. Do you have any idea how many shades of white exist out there in the wonderful world of paint???? Here are a few helpful tips to assist you in choosing the best shades for you. 1) Consider light sources such as northern vs. southern, eastern or western exposure; 2) think about the desired effect or mood of the room; and 3) allow for the type of lighting to be used in the room. NOTE: if fluorescent lights are used take particular care to view the color under them as any shade goes a bit stark and cool in florescent lighting.

Since this post is about paint color and I mentioned my consternation over the availability of so many whites, I’ll close with some of my favorites.

BeamBabe’s “Can’t Fail” whites from Benjamin Moore:

Linen White – warm

Mayonnaise – great warm trim color

Monterrey White – a cool white

Navajo White – a classic

Elephant Tusk – this color gave my bathroom a warm, spa-like feel.

Natural Wicker – another warm white
